People say Californians are serious about wine and relaxed about everything else. Well, when you’re surrounded by natural wonder and constant sunshine, it’s pretty easy to smile. Of course, a glass of California wine always helps. The wines of California are known around the globe for their quality and diversity<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 California makes about 90 percent of all American wine. If California were a country, it would rank fourth in the world for wine production, behind France, Spain and Italy. The state’s size and diverse climate and soils allow over 100 winegrape varieties to grow in the state, covering 526,600 vineyard acres. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


\u2022 The church brought wine to California. European vines were first planted, as settlers and missionaries made their way up and down the west coast, most famous a Franciscan missionary named Father Junipero Serra who started planting grapes at Mission San Diego de Alcala in 1769. They brought with them the Mission grape \u2013 the vinifera variety also instrumental in establishing viniculture in Central and South America. Although very few Mission vines are to be found in California today, it remains a cornerstone of Californian wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Recognized by the Terminator: California wine is earth-friendly. California vintners and growers have the most widely adopted green winegrowing and winemaking program in the world, one that has won Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s top environmental award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


\u2022 Many celebrities own or co-own wineries. Legendary Hollywood director Francis Ford Coppola (Apocalypse Now), Olympic Gold Medal figure skater Peggy Fleming, racecar driver Randy Lewis and “The Bachelor” reality star Andrew Firestone all own or co-own wineries.
\u2022 Movies love wine. Sales of Pinot Noir skyrocketed after 2004’s hit movie Sideways, which took place in Santa Barbara County. 2008’s Bottle Shock tells the story of the 1976 “Judgment of Paris,” where California wines beat French wines in a blind taste test, giving California international recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


\u2022 Winegrapes were still grown during Prohibition. California winegrowers shipped grapes to home winemakers, who could legally make up to 200 gallons of wine for home use. Some wineries made sacramental wines as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They sought to craft a blend that was not only smooth mellow red, but one with touches of sweetness; this was achieved by crafting a perfect blend of 55% Zinfandel and 45% Moscato.
